• "If everything is a priority, then nothing is a priority"

    Think about this statement for a minute. If you are always trying to do a number of things at once, usually you end up getting nowhere, doing a little of this & that and not really getting much done.

    People often take this approach with their training. They find themselves caught up with the latest training fads, new equipment, new classes or a new training method they have read about in a magazine combined with some fancy ‘detox’ diet. Well done, you are on the path to becoming the ultimate fitness fanatic!

    Whether it’s a powerlifter, MMA fighter, strongman, rugby player, or a bodybuilder, if you want to fulfill your potential at your given sport your main priority is your sport.  If you want to lose body fat, your priority should be making sure your nutrition & training matches up with this.

    You have to decide what things are most important for helping towards your goal, and if something doesn’t help you towards that, it shouldn’t have a place in your program.

    Asking your self “does this take me closer to where I want to be?” is a simple way of keeping on the right path.

    For example, a powerlifter needs to get strong at the squat, bench & deadlift. Their training should be constructed around these lifts with assistance exercises that are going to help them improve their lift numbers. I can guarantee you won’t find a top powerlifter doing a heavy squat day followed by some insanity training the next day, a cross fit WOD the next, throw some zumba in there and why not add a 5k run??

    Pick your priority
    This would make no sense as it takes the lifter further away from his goal of increasing strength in his lifts.

    If they followed this approach there is no way they could become an elite lifter! Sure they may become better at all the other stuff, but their powerlifting isn’t going to improve; it would likely get worse!

    You may be thinking, 'I'm not interested in become elite in anything, I just want to be fit', but this still applies to you. If you want to achieve the best results you need set your goal & follow the plan. Do not let yourself be fooled into trying to do everything at once!

    Whatever your goal is, sit down and think about what is really going to help you get to that goal. It’s usually pretty simple, you don’t have to complicate it by trying to do everything at once!
